Summary: This study was realized to find out more about the informal sectors of West Africa and to better help these low-income countries. The countries studied were the following: Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Chad, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal and Sierra Leone. The study begins with a profile of the informal sectors, describing the characteristics of microenterprises, the main impediments to their growth and the different assistance programs. The study then analyzes nine reputable microfinancing institutions. The paper is organized as follows: First, section I presents 4 chapters which give a brief overview of the study: 1) Chapter 2 summarizes the results of the country studies; 2) chapter 3 describes the efficacy of credit and savings services for the poor; 3) chapter 4 is a summary of the nine case studies done on the microfinancing institutions of the region; and 4) chapter 5 completes the study by focusing on the implications for the Bank. Finally, section II of the report contains the 12 country studies and section III the scrupulous evaluations of the 9 microfinancing institutions.
