Summary: Until the early 1970s, Seychelles' development prospects were limited; economic exchanges were minimal and a few agricultural commodities were exported to finance imports of rice. In recent years, Seychelles has become a service economy, with tourism the major industry. The country's own resources are not sufficient to maintain economic activity and development, and an increase in domestic efforts will be required for the investment program. In view of the impressive management capability of the administration and a well-designed development strategy with clear-cut priorities, financial constraints are likely to be the major problem in attaining the development objectives - improved social conditions, increased economic self-reliance, and satisfaction of basic needs.
