Mary C. Hallward-Driemeier

Lead Economist

MARY HALLWARD-DREIMEIER is a Senior Economist in the World Bank's Research Department.  Her work focuses on the microeconomics of growth. One current project looks at the sources of productivity growth and the efficient allocation of resources across firms, with a focus on how the process of creative destruction is affected during crises. A second project analyses the legal and financial barriers to enterprise development in Africa, with an emphasis on expanding economic opportunities for women. Mary was the Deputy Director of the 2005 WDR "A Better Investment Climate for Everyone."  Since joining Research Department in 1997, Mary has worked on firm productivity, foreign direct investment, the impact of financial crises and the impact of the investment climate on firm performance. She is a co-founder of the Micro-Economics of Growth Network, organizing conferences in Brazil, China, India and the US.  She was a core member of the team which developed and mainstreamed investment climate surveys and has co-authored and reviewed multiple Investment Climate Assessments in every region. Her research has been included in several books and journals. She has a Ph.D. in Economics from M.I.T. and an M.Sc. from Oxford University.
