JULIO A. BERDEGUÉ is Principal Researcher at Rimisp-Latin American Centre for Rural Development (www.rimisp.org). He holds a PhD in Social Sciences from Wageningen University.  His recent areas of interest include non-farm rural employment, small farmers’ economic organizations, the rise of supermarkets and its impact on agrifood systems, and area-based (territorial) approach to rural development. He is Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees of CIMMYT (International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center) and Chair of the Board of Directors of CONDESAN (Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Andean Ecoregion).
