An opportunity and a challenge

World Development Report 2007 notes that the expected decline in dependency (increase in working age population relative to non-working age population) offers a tremendous opportunity for economic growth in South Asia, provided that the greater labor supply is productively employed, and that saving and investment increase.

This demographic shift is both an opportunity and a challenge in a region that lags behind in key areas such as literacy and maternal health.
