The idea for this conference is to convene a group with a common interest in understanding which factors drive industrial development. Economists working in three areas: development economics, trade and industrial organization have been looking at these issues but from disparate viewpoints. Our intention is not to duplicate this work but rather to forge something new at the interface of these three literatures.
Papers, which look at industrial performance directly, and at the link to institutions and policies, will be presented.
The conference organizers are Robin Burgess and John Sutton of the London School of Economics and David Dollar of Development Economics, World Bank. The group plans to meet twice a year, in different locations.
