Urban and Regional Development

Rio urban

World Bank research on spatial economics addresses issues related to urban development and infrastructure systems.

  • Urban development
  • Regional economics
  • Transport and development
 Research focus Themes
Urban development
Access to public services; improving fiscal sustainability of urban service provision; housing market dynamics and employment opportunities. Closely related are evaluations of urban upgrading projects, titling, and pro-poor policies for improving the life of slum dwellers.
Regional economics
The role of cities and city systems in a dynamic environment for regional growth; policies to promote development in lagging regions, such as infrastructure investments and secondary city strategies. These activities are closely linked with concepts of the new economic geography, and often use geo-referenced data and spatial analytic techniques.

Transport and development
How investments in transport infrastructure affect regional or international trade, economic growth and a country’s internal economic geography of production.
