Designing Surveys

This site is primarily designed for people who would like to obtain information on the materials produced by DECRG to assist in the implementation of surveys. The following links describe the core of our efforts to this end.

1. A Manual for Planning and Implementing the Living Standards Measurement Study Surveys. - this manual provides practical information on how to implement an LSMS-style survey from the planning stages through implementation in the field.

2. Household Survey Clinics- are designed to assist in the design and implementation of household surveys in low income countries. The Clinics provide broad feedback on all phases of the household survey plans and identify areas for which the TTL needs assistance or follow-up on technical issues identified during the Clinic.

3. Designing Household Survey Questionnaires for Developing Countries - this book covers key topics in the design of household surveys with many suggestions for customizing surveys to local circumstances and improving data quality.

4. Energy Policies and Multitopic Household Surveys: Guidelines for Questionnaire Design in Living Standards Measurement Studies - this paper provides information on how questions can be added to multi-topic household surveys to yield more useful information for energy policy analysis.

5. Are You Being Served? - this book provides tools for collecting data on service delivery.

6. Questionnaires - developers of new surveys may find it useful to refer to sample questionnaires as well as to guidelines on how to develop questionnaires.

7. Interviewer Manuals, Abstracts, Survey Documentation, etc. - in addition to the questionnaires, we can provide samples of the other types of documents necessary for implementing a successful survey.

8. Other Tools - other materials on topics such as survey design, construction of aggregates, use of anthropometric data, assessment of income, etc.

9. Sampling with Probability Proportional to Size - A Stata do program to select a sample using the Probability Proportional to Size (PPS) procedure.
