At the regional level, the performance of the East Asia and Pacific region in attaining all 9 MDGs well ahead of the 2015 deadline is spectacular. From a starting position similar to Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia in 1990, East Asia and Pacific is the best performer amongst all regions.
The region’s record in poverty reduction is also unique. In 1990, it had nearly 1 billion people (50 percent of world share) living below $1.25 a day and the highest poverty rate (56 percent). In 2010, its poverty rate had decreased to 12 percent and is projected to decline to 6 percent by 2015. Evidently, most of its success is due to China’s contribution.
At the country level however, the region’s performance is more mixed. With the exception of 2 MDGs — gender parity in primary education and access to safe drinking water— each of the other 8 MDG targets are unlikely to be met by at least 12 countries. The undernourishment and maternal mortality targets are unlikely to be reached by 18 countries in region.
